Put simply, then, individuals gain weight when their energy intake exceeds their energy expenditure. However, energy imbalance is not a straightforward physical issue, because relationships with food and drink are complex and are affected by behaviour, environment, genetics and culture.

Young people who are overweight or obese can gain numerous benefits from physical activity; specifically, it can

increase lean body mass (total mass or weight minus body fat) and energy expenditure (energy or calories used for functions such as breathing, digestion and movement), thereby helping achieve and maintain energy balance (equilibrium between energy intake and energy expenditure) and preventing weight gain;

improve a young person’s metabolic profile (e.g., produce favourable changes in blood cholesterol levels and increase insulin sensitivity);

help protect against or manage other health problems and conditions associated with obesity (e.g., high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, asthma);

improve psychological well-being and help young people feel good about themselves and

help prevent or reverse the downward spiral into inactivity due to associated health difficulties and complications that make participation more difficult (British Heart Foundation, 2011; Cale & Harris, 2009).
